䷄ 5. Das Warten
Judgment
Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success. Perseverance brings good fortune.
Image
Clouds rise up to heaven: the image of Waiting. The superior person eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer.
Interpretation
Hexagram 5 counsels patience and trust in the natural timing of events. Like clouds gathering before rain, nourishment is coming but cannot be forced. The wise person waits with inner certainty, nourishing themselves while the moment ripens.
Water above heaven — clouds have formed but rain has not yet fallen. The tension between readiness and timing is at the heart of this hexagram. Everything is prepared, yet the decisive moment has not arrived.
This is not passive waiting but active patience: maintaining your strength, your clarity, and your joy while the conditions develop. The danger ahead is real, but meeting it with anxiety weakens your position. Meet it instead with calm confidence.
Counsel
The situation requires patient waiting, not forced action. Nourish yourself — body, mind, and spirit — while the conditions ripen. Trust that the right moment will come, and when it does, you will be ready. Anxiety only drains the strength you will need when the time for action arrives.
