On the earth is water: the image of Holding Together. The kings of antiquity bestowed the different states as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations with the feudal lords.

Hexagram 8 emphasizes the importance of union and mutual support. Like water flowing over the earth, people naturally seek connection. This hexagram advises examining whether your alliances are built on genuine sincerity and shared values.

Water on the earth fills every hollow and connects every stream — it naturally seeks to unite. This is the image of holding together: not through force or obligation, but through the natural affinity that arises when people share authentic bonds.

The hexagram contains a profound warning as well: examine your own worthiness to lead or join. Before seeking union with others, ask whether you possess the inner qualities that make genuine partnership possible — sublimity of character, constancy of purpose, and perseverance through difficulty.

Counsel

Examine the quality of your connections. Are they built on genuine mutual respect and shared values, or on convenience and habit? This is a time to strengthen authentic bonds and gently release those that no longer serve your growth. The strongest alliances are those where every member freely chooses to stay.

Changing Lines

Hold to him in truth and loyalty; this is without blame. Truth, like a full earthen bowl: thus in the end good fortune comes from without. — Sincerity is the foundation of all genuine connection. Good fortune. — True leadership allows freedom within structure. The king who hunts from three sides leaves one side open — those who choose to stay do so freely, and their loyalty is genuine.
He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune. — Without a clear center or worthy leader, union cannot form. If the foundation of trust and shared purpose is missing, no amount of effort will hold the group together.
