Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find answers to the most common questions about how the platform works and how to consult the I Ching through the system.
What is I Ching Time?
I Ching Time is a digital platform designed to help users consult the I Ching (Book of Changes) using the traditional coin method. The platform guides you through the process of formulating a question, generating your hexagram, and receiving an interpretation to support reflection and insight.
The system combines traditional symbolic methods with modern tools to help users explore the meaning of their consultation.
How does a consultation work?
The platform supports two different ways of consulting the I Ching. You can either follow the traditional method independently using the educational guides on the site, or perform a guided consultation through the platform.
Both approaches respect the traditional coin method.
**1. Free consultation using the traditional method**
If you prefer to consult the I Ching independently, the platform provides detailed guidance to help you perform the process on your own. You can: learn how to formulate a clear question; follow the traditional three-coin method; understand how hexagrams are formed; study the meaning of each hexagram and its changing lines; explore explanations about trigrams, symbols, and interpretation. This option is completely free and allows you to consult the I Ching using your own interpretation and reflection.
**2. Guided consultation through the platform**
Users who create an account can perform a guided consultation experience designed to support the entire process step by step. The platform helps with: formulating your question so it becomes clear and meaningful; casting the coins through the traditional six coin throws; generating the hexagram and identifying changing lines; providing a personalized interpretation in relation to your question; explaining the transformation if changing lines appear; allowing follow-up questions related to the consultation; and saving your consultation history for future reflection.
Both approaches are designed to respect the contemplative nature of the I Ching while making the consultation process accessible to both beginners and experienced users.
What kind of questions should I ask?
The I Ching works best with open and reflective questions.
Examples: What should I understand about this situation? How should I approach this decision? What attitude would be beneficial now?
Questions that demand absolute predictions or simple yes/no answers are usually less effective.
How does the platform understand my question?
Your question is processed by the platform's system in order to generate a contextual interpretation based on the hexagram that emerges from your coin throws.
The interpretation connects the symbolic structure of the hexagram with the theme of your question, helping you explore possible perspectives on the situation.
For best results, try to formulate clear and focused questions.
Can I ask the same question multiple times?
It is generally recommended to avoid repeating the same question immediately after receiving a consultation.
There is a principle in the I Ching: "If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. If importunate, I give no information."
A single well-crafted consultation can be a source of reflection for days, weeks, or even months. You don't need to throw the coins again to deepen your understanding; in fact, excessive consultations on the same topic may indicate anxiety, which goes against the "Active Humility" that Hexagram 4 suggests.
This means that insisting on the same question with new readings usually indicates that we are not accepting the first answer or that we only want to hear what pleases us. Since you already have a rich map, trust it.
If the situation evolves over time, you may return to it later with a new consultation.
Is my consultation private?
Yes. Your questions and consultations are associated only with your account and are not publicly visible.
For privacy reasons, we recommend avoiding the inclusion of highly sensitive personal information in your questions.
Do consultations predict the future?
No. The I Ching is traditionally used as a symbolic system for reflection and insight, not as a tool for predicting fixed future events.
Interpretations are intended to help you observe patterns, perspectives, and possibilities related to the situation you are exploring.
How many consultations can I perform?
The number of consultations available depends on the credits in your account.
New users may receive a free consultation upon registration. Additional consultations can be purchased through the platform.
Can I ask follow-up questions about my consultation?
When changing lines appear in your reading, the platform may allow additional clarification questions related to that consultation.
This helps explore the meaning of the transformation indicated by the hexagram.
Can I review my previous consultations?
Yes. Once you create an account, the platform stores a history of your consultations so you can revisit past readings and reflect on them later.
Your consultation history is available from the History section of your account.
Do I need physical coins?
Yes. The platform encourages the use of three physical coins to perform the traditional method of consultation.
The result of your coin throws is then entered into the platform so the system can generate the corresponding hexagram and interpretation.
What are changing lines?
When casting the coins, some lines may appear as changing lines.
Changing lines indicate movement or transformation within the situation being examined. When they occur, a second hexagram may emerge, offering additional perspective on how the situation may evolve.
The platform will guide you through this process when it occurs.
I am new to the I Ching. Is the platform suitable for beginners?
Yes. The platform includes guidance to help beginners: formulate meaningful questions; perform the coin method; understand hexagrams and changing lines; interpret results within a modern context.
