䷃ 4. La Necedad Juvenil
Judgment
Youthful Folly has success. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me.
Image
A spring wells up at the foot of the mountain: the image of Youth. The superior person cultivates character through thoroughness in all that she does.
Interpretation
Hexagram 4 represents the innocence and inexperience of youth. It speaks of learning, mentorship, and the humility required to grow. The student must seek the teacher with sincerity, and the teacher must be patient but firm.
A spring emerging at the foot of a mountain — water at its source, still unclear, finding its way. This is the image of youthful folly: full of potential but not yet knowing the path. Education here is not about filling an empty vessel but about guiding natural growth.
The hexagram teaches that the relationship between student and teacher is sacred. The student must approach with genuine desire to learn, not merely seeking easy answers. The teacher must respond to sincere inquiry but not chase after those who show no real interest in growth.
Counsel
Approach your current situation with the humility of a student. Whether you are the one learning or teaching, sincerity is the essential ingredient. Ask your questions honestly, listen to the answers with an open heart, and remember that every wise person was once a fool who had the courage to learn.
Changing Lines
- To make a fool develop, it furthers one to apply discipline. The fetters should be removed. To go on in this way brings humiliation. — Initial discipline helps establish good habits, but it should not become a permanent constraint. Once the lesson is learned, freedom must be restored.
- To bear with fools in kindliness brings good fortune. To know how to take women brings good fortune. The son is capable of taking charge of the household. — Patience with those who are still learning, combined with understanding and gentle firmness, brings the best results.
- Take not a maiden who, when she sees a man of bronze, loses possession of herself. Nothing furthers. — Don't be dazzled by superficial attractions. When one abandons their own center to chase after something impressive, nothing good comes of it.
- Entangled folly brings humiliation. — When ignorance is compounded by isolation, the result is confusion and shame. This is the folly of refusing to seek help or learn from others. Don't let pride keep you stuck in your own limited understanding.
- Childlike folly brings good fortune. — There is wisdom in approaching life with beginner's mind. The innocence of the child who asks questions freely, without pretense, opens doors that sophistication cannot. Embrace not knowing as a gift.
- In punishing folly, it does not further one to commit transgressions. The only thing that furthers is to prevent transgressions. — Correction must be proportional and preventive, not punitive. The purpose of discipline is to prevent harm, not to inflict it.
