The Receptive brings about sublime success, furthering through the perseverance of a mare.
Image
The earth's condition is receptive devotion. The superior person who has breadth of character carries the outer world.
Interpretation
Hexagram 2 represents pure receptive energy — the nurturing force that sustains and completes what has been initiated. It symbolizes devotion, adaptability, and the strength found in yielding. This hexagram advises following rather than leading, and finding power in support and responsiveness.
The six broken lines form the archetype of earth — pure yin energy in its fullest expression. The earth receives the seed of heaven and brings it to fruition. Without this receptive power, nothing that is created can take form or endure.
The Receptive teaches that there is profound strength in openness. The mare, which moves freely across the earth, symbolizes the ability to be responsive without losing one's nature. True receptivity is not passivity — it is the active choice to support, nurture, and bring things to completion.
Counsel
This is a time to support rather than initiate. Find strength in receptivity — listen deeply, respond with care, and trust that your nurturing presence is itself a powerful force. Like the earth that sustains all life without seeking recognition, your role now is to provide the foundation upon which great things can grow.
Changing Lines
- When there is hoarfrost underfoot, solid ice is not far off. — Pay attention to the first signs. Small changes in your environment signal larger shifts to come. Awareness of beginnings helps you prepare wisely.
- Straight, square, great. Without purpose, yet nothing remains unfurthered. — Act with natural integrity, without forcing outcomes. When your character is genuine and your actions are upright, success follows without striving.
- Hidden lines. One is able to remain persevering. If following in service of a king, seek not works but bring to completion. — Conceal your talents when the time demands it. Focus on completing what others have begun rather than seeking recognition.
- A tied-up sack. No blame, no praise. — Extreme caution is called for. Keep your thoughts and talents hidden. This is not a time for display or initiative, but for quiet self-containment.
- A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune. — Yellow symbolizes the middle way; the lower garment symbolizes discretion. True excellence expressed modestly brings the greatest fortune. Let your inner qualities speak through your actions, not your words.
- Dragons fight in the meadow. Their blood is black and yellow. — When the receptive tries to become the creative, conflict arises. Overstepping your natural role leads to struggle. Both forces are wounded when yin and yang lose their balance.
